This is the author's second version of this book; the first version is called "Unraveling Ada". I liked the first version better. The main changes that I can see, are the order of chapters and the omission of the prologue in the second version.

Without giving too much away, the first version had a prologue that really drew me in. It set the stage for the eeriness of the Stowall family story. The first version made the intrigue all about the recently deceased quilter, Ada, the quilters and their relationship to each other, the quilt itself, and the 'off' person who we keep running into almost every other chapter. The fact that the main character, Rachel, is hired to investigate things is secondary.

The second version takes away the intrique of the 'off' person...he is still in the book but comes along later and becomes more of an aside, I think. The first chapter in this version doesn't draw me in like the prologue of the first version.

It's hard to say having read both versions almost back-to-back but I think the fact that the first version had so much intrigue going for it made up for the main character not being that interesting.

Ada Unraveled a Quilted Mystery novel edition by Barbara Sullivan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This has been an entertaining and thought provoking story, that frankly had me puzzled many times. Who were these people, were they crazy, were they just reserved? And Ruth...who, or what, is Ruth? I really enjoyed this book, and would recommend it to anyone.
The author stated she wanted to educate people on Hemophilia and she failed miserably. In no way was this even a decent mystery and too many threads left hanging. I bought it because it sounded like a mystery about quilters, but was more about one family with several members sterilized due to ignorance of their parents. This is one of those books where I really have to wonder if all of the positive ratings are from friends and family. I am sorry but this is the first really negative review I have left for a book and I thought about not rating it but I hate when a book has some excellent ratings and is actually a bad story.
Poor character development and too much irrelevant detail. I had a lot of trouble keeping all the different characters straight and the ending left many unanswered questions.
Since I am a quilter (as well as a lover of a good mystery) I was eagerly awaiting the time to sit and devour this book. I loved the first few chapters, while it may appear as slow to some, it worked well to lay the ground work for the coming mystery. I couldn't put it down!

Then, something happened towards the end. The book changed. It was almost as if the author had used up her allotted pages and needed to wrap it up quickly. The long awaited climax...was very anti-climactic. I can understand the wanting to leave something open for a sequel... but this book had too much left hanging. I closed the book feeling that too many pages had been ripped out of my book. A very unsatisfied read. While I might have been interested in the sequel, I will not read it. I do not like the feeling of being left hanging. Who was the murderer?

If a bit more attention had been paid to the ending of the book (like the type that had been paid to the character development) this would have earned 5 stars from me.
Interesting light reading with good character development. Compelling story for the most part, although I thought it wrapped up a bit too easily and quickly at the end.
I enjoyed the information about the quilting and it added to the story line most of the way, but again the ending seemed to depart from the quilt.
Great airplane read and I am off to buy the next one.
There are some editing issues which normally annoy me to no end, but the story was engaging enough to look past it. It's a very strange story, and I do wish it had ended up tying together more succinctly, but overall was interesting enough to keep you hooked. It's definitely not like anything I've read before.
This book combines quilting and a mystery, two things I love and I really regret that I wasn't able to get involved with the story. The initial quilt meeting had so many people coming and going, I couldn't keep track of who was who and kept re-reading in an effort to figure out what was going on. Characters would be in two places at once and the descriptions of the house were simply confusing. A good editor or proof-reader might have allowed the story to shine.
